Is it possible?

Is the abiogenic theory plausible?

Ooooohhh.....

I suppose it may be possible, but if so that means my BS detector is seriously on the fritz. If it is pseudoscience, it is a case I'm not familiar with. However, there is plenty of pseudoscience that fits that bill. I'll see what I can find out about it.

Ok... here's what I've found so far. According to the abstract of a paper in Nature, hydrocarbons can be produced abiogenically, but ...

Given that these trends are not observed in the isotopic signatures of economic gas reservoirs, we can now rule out the presence of a globally significant abiogenic source of hydrocarbons.

I'm sure there is much more out there, but the simple fact the people trumpeting this as unlimited oil are not, on the whole, members of the scientific community, and since (as far as I can see) this isn't being widely embraced by the scientific community, I would say that hopes shouldn't be over-elevated.
