Oh, you laugh, but I was brought up not only with these tenets, but that the Latin inscription on the headband of the "funny hat" worn by the Pope spells out the infamous '666' that is identified in Revelation as the number of the Beast. So my church didn't "guess" that the papacy could hold "either" the false prophet or the anti-Christ; it was (and is, mostly) CERTAIN that the papacy IS the anti-Christ (but they ascribe that to the seat of power, not to any individual who happens to be in it).

Of course, there are historically-based reasons for some segments of (primarily American) Protestantism to come to these doctrinal conclusions, since, well, ever since the Puritan days, Roman Catholicism was vilified, and the later waves of Irish (and Italian and Polish) immigration didn't help matters. I find the comments about Islam and the Palestinians interesting, too. Don't these people realize that Allah is the same god as Jehovah? Monotheism is monotheism, when you get right down to it.
