Blogmeet

from - smijer

Chattanooga is long overdue for a blogmeet, where area bloggers can meet & greet, share tips, and talk about what moves us to blog. Some of us Scenic City Bloggers are talking over a date on the weekend starting Friday, 7/15. If you are a Chattanooga area blogger interested in attending, please use the comment thread of this post to discuss a favored date and/or venue. I'm looking forward to seeing those of you I know already and meeting those I don't. Oh yeah, and people who may be from out of town, but blog or comment primarily through a Chattanooga area web-site, you're also invited. I hope that we can get together and make this a success!

P.S. I'm trying to help get interest up, but this is a community project. Folks like Alice, Josiah, Michael Kelly, and other Chattanooga area bloggers have at least as much say in all this as I do.

Update, 7/11: I've called Northshore Grille and Greyfriars. Northshore doesn't have separate seating, but could accomodate us if we schedule ahead of time (meaning we are going to need as much RSVP action as we can get if we go with this one), and come in between 2p.m. and 5p.m. on Saturday.

I'll have to call Greyfriars back before noon tomorrow and speak to the manager about using their loft area.

Do I hear a second to the motion to utilize Meetup.com? I'm not particularly eager to go that route, personally, but if there's a consensus around that idea, I'll work on it.

Update, 7/13:
OK... I've made my calls, and - since there's just no way to do this democratically and have everyone aware of the plans by this weekend, I'm going to make an executive decision (if there are howls of protest, I will rescind it, and try to figure out a more democratic approach):

The First Periodic Chattanooga Area Blogmeet and Blogstravaganza will be held at 3:00 P.M. - til ??, Saturday, July 16, 2005, at Greyfriars on Broad St.

Coffee, tea, and pastries are available for purchase. Greyfriar's WiFi network is available if anyone cares to blog from the meet.

We hope for as many people as possible to come (though we are expecting less than 20, and may have to find other accomodations if the crowd swells too much). Those who can't make it this time, we hope to see you at future meets!

Bloggers, it's appreciated if you pass the word to your readers, and to other bloggers who may be interested.

Party On!

Yes -- I vote for some place with food, a variety of beverages, and wi-fi -- does Coolidge Park's or the Stone Cup's signal extend to the restaurants along Frazier? Perhaps the Northshore Grill would work?

So far, a vote for BBQ & Booze, and a vote for Wi-Fi... I'm not sure whether the Cup's network will reach the Northshore Grill... but there's always the possibility of BBQ & Booze, and then an adjournment to the Cup for coffee & wi-fi?

Why do we need Wi-Fi? We're meeting in person.

I think the idea behind having wi-fi is for live-blogging the event (if anyone is so moved), and for sharing coding ideas and that sort of thing. It's probably not a must-have, but it would be a plus.

I'll certainly try to be there, though I was wondering... will there be a gentle-folks' agreement that those of us who blog anonymously will stay that way?

I actually have utmost faith in the blogging community folks, but Chattanooga is, well, the smallest town of all time. I gues I could always wear a mask. Or we could hold the blogmeet in a darkened parking garage.

TL, of course there is no way to guarantee that your anonymity will be respected by all who attend, but we will certainly ask that those attending respect any requests to be kept anonymous. 'Course if you aren't already well known to the other bloggers, you could withhold your real name - that would provide somewhat more protection to you identity.

Well, it just became a moot point! I'm being dragged to wedding out of town that weekend. But have fun, and I love the idea of a blogmeet. Hopefully it will become semi-regular.

While a Georgia boy I'm only 1.5 hours away, but alas I have a company outing coming up. I'll be sure to check in for the particulars.

Keep us informed....I enjoy reading about the meetups & had a blast at the Atlanta one a while back.

So, perhaps we should pick a day and time? Shall we give the Northshore Grill a try?

Since no-one has mentioned a preference on days, I thought a Saturday afternoon would be best. I'll call Northshore Grill Monday & see if they have room for... what... a dozen of us?

Having a chatt blogger get together sounds like it could be interesting! Though, I am surprised there were only a few people that have voiced their interest. I think a get together could be good.

Please let me know time and dates and I will see if I can make it.

That Saturday sounds great, as does the Northshore Grille. I look forward to it.

Hey, on a quick search I noticed there's already a meetup for chattanooga bloggers: http://blog.meetup.com/72/

OK, I'm adding an update in the post as well, but I've called Northshore Grille and Greyfriars. Bill... I'm not really setting the agenda, but I envision it as an opportunity to get to know one another as a blogging community, to share ideas about coding, blog topics, projects, or whatever, and to just generally have a good time with our blog-neighbors. 'Course, we can also go cow-tipping if that's what everyone wants to do. It's supposed to be pretty open-ended.

Sounds good. I'm an anonymous blogger as well, and while I don't mind the whole meet-and-greet thing, I'd really rather the whole picture taking thing not happen. Or at least not with me in them. Otherwise, I'll see you boys there.

As soon as you figure out the time/place thingie, that is.

I'm not married to the Greyfriar's idea...
...especially since I probably won't be able to attend at all.

I'm not married to any particular idea, but I'm warming to Greyfriars. I forgot to call them yesterday, but I'll call this morning. Nominations are still open, by the way...

Mays, sorry to hear you can't make it. Absolutely on a future meet.

Update for everyone - I've made a call on the time & place: Saturday, 7/16, 3:00p.m. at Greyfriars. Hope to see you there. Howl with rage if you don't like this plan!

Hey, Thanks for picking Greyfriar's (btw: we don't have our meeting room anymore, the table is in our dining room and the roaster is in it's place downtown.) Saturday is actually the 16th, aka the release date for Harry Potter and the half-blood prince.

Leda,

Thanks for the correction on the date. I guess I screwed up... I've fixed it now.

I hope we'll see you there... & I hope that the Potter release doesn't steal our thunder too much.
