Assassination: Cheaper than Starting a War

from - smijer

Where was Pat Robertson two & a half years ago?

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator*," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." [...] and I don't think any oil shipments will stop. {rim-shot}

*In case you didn't click the link, Robertson is speaking of democratically elected Hugo Chávez, not strong-arm dictator Saddam Hussein. I was confused for a minute myself.

Love him or hate him, Chávez is the legitimate representative of the people of Venezuela. I'm no big fan of extrajudicial killing, but I might have been happy looking the other way if the policy on Iraq was to send in the Delts and take out the Three Thugs Hussein. After all three vigilante killings are better than tens of thousands... especially of civilians and Americans. Where was this kind of thinking in 2003?

Um, I'm confused by Pat's assumption that we have to "take out" Venezuela's President at all, either way. Why would we do this to a major trading partner? We certainly aren't trying to "take out" any one in China, that I know of, despite their record on communism, human rights abuses, etc.

Chávez has his disappointing moments, but he is the democratically elected leader of Venezuela. And though his treatment of political opposition is, shall we say, strong-armed, look at what he's doing in terms of job training programs for the poor. Teaching poor people skills so that they can work and be financially self-sufficient -- now what kind of an idea is that?

I'm with you 100% on that Joe.

Ain't it funny how state-worshipping religious leaders take up the lingo of the Mafia

"Take Out" my ass. Why don't we just "feed him to the fish".

Oops, I think I misled with my quotes around "take out." I was using the phrase sarcastically myself, not quoting Robertson. Not a big deal, but I'm a stickler sometimes. Still, you bring up another point by referring to Mafia lingo. This guy actually has run for President before. If he had won, would he be ordering hits like this?

I did find this interesting, on the BBC site:

A spokeswoman for the Christian Broadcasting Network told the BBC: "We are at a time of war and Pat had war on his mind when he made the comments."

Robertson is quoted in the AP release as saying "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability."... so you must have been reading his mind.
