National Nightmare
from - Buck
The situation in New Orleans is horrifying. I was stunned when I found out that people were actually shooting at the helicopters sent in to help try and relieve some of the suffering.
The real tragedy is that even though the vast majority of those stranded are decent people who find themselves trapped in a nightmare they will all be labeled as rabble and worthless welfare recipients who deserve to drown or starve since they are shooting at the rescuers.
No potable water. No electricity. Chaos in the streets.
New Orleans is experiencing the reality of a different and yet very similar version of shock and awe.

The military says they know of no confirmed reports of shooting at helicopers. Things get on the news pretty quick, but the spokesman said the helicopers make a lot of noises.
There will be a lot of traumatic stress for years to come.

Thanks Clyde. It is true that reports come in so fast nowadays and get to the television and print media without proper verification that reports do get mixed up.
I do not fault the media. Their guys are there to get stories and it is always a race to see who can get the latest on the air first sometimes at the expense of accuracy.
And you're right. It is going to be years before this is straightened out.
It will probably be a West Coast earthquake before we see a disaster of this magnitude again. And who knows. That could happen at any time and with absolutely no warning whatsoever.

Apparently someone has been shooting at hospital rescue heliocopters. The news said Coast Guard and military helicopters, which the commanders denied that they had been shot at.
Hospital trauma flights shot at...ouch.

I was up early this morning watching the mess on CNN.
It is sobering to consider the fine line that exists between civility and barbarism.
The Governors of Mississippi and Louisiana are warning of shoot-to-kill orders. Countless thousands of people sit in New Orleans and wait on buses to take them away.
I think that the magnitude of this disaster has still not been fully realized.
