Speaking of the world getting heavier, my college roommates and I used to speculate about what would happen if everyone in China were to jump off a chair and land at the same time.

I calculate that at (guessing) average 65kg per individual, with a population of 1,306,313,812, the population of China together has a mass of roughly 8.9*10^7 metric tons. The earth itself has a mass of 5.9*10^21 tons.

With that in mind, I think the answer to the speculation from your youth would be "not much". Unless I figured wrong.
