SPECIAL ALERT! NBC to mock the Crucifixion of Christ
from - smijer
I got this forwarded to me by the CEO of my company today (not me, personally - it went to all of the staff).
NBC, fresh from giving us the anti-Christian The Book of Daniel , has decided to hit back at the Christian community by presenting an episode of Will and Grace which mocks the crucifixion of Christ.
I hate to break it to you, Mr. Wildmon, but they aren't making fun of the Crucifixion of Christ. They are making fun of humorless, pompous culture warriors like yourself.
And now that you've shared the outrage with your flock ("2,985,458 Supporters Strong and Growing!"), NBC will probably feel the pressure and cave to it, pulling the episode out of the line-up and prompting people like me to laugh at their spineless butts.
Won't that be nice?
Wouldn't it be nicer if we all learned how to laugh at ourselves a little instead of taking offense at every poke or tease?

Yea...I saw that, and laughed.
I thought the episode sounded quite funny! :)

To me, it's a pattern from Hollywood. Fresh of the heels of the book of Daniel, NBC's timing could have been better.
But really, it seems to me, as someone who takes their faith very seriously, that it's open season on Christians - as long as it's funny - who cares if they are offended.
It gets old.

Yeah, these are the guys who got "The Book of Daniel" cancelled. I used your link to the AFA website to use their (the AFA's)own automated Email to NBC to encourage NBC to ignore them. Don't know if that tactic will work,.. but it was kinda fun.

Via Dave, here's a reminder of what the faithful could be focusing on instead of puffing up over entertainment:
Last night on The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert said something pretty poignant. He was talking about Kanye West's cover of Rolling Stone where he was dressed like Jesus. (See the cover here). He said something to the effect of, "What can be more offensive to Christians than a rap star on the cover of a magazine dressed like Jesus?" A caption came on the screen asking, "Maybe Darfur?"
(thanks Dave!)

Well... yeah... that's the point of teasing... to get people who are "offended" all the time to lighten up a little bit. Trust me - I'm a Unitarian, and we get a lot of ribbing (ever watch the Simpsons?) Some of us laugh at it, and some of us puff up like school children. Those that puff up get teased more, until they either get a sense of humor or complain to the teacher - at which point, they lose whatever audience they had for their sulking...

Yeah, and the outraged xians are some of the first ones to tell us that the Muslims should lighten up.

Religion, Wildmon and many things about Christianity are fair game. I know Don Wildmon, he's a very bright and funny guy, and he can even take a joke. But I'm talking about things that actually offend sincere people of faith. And I'm sincere. Making fun of or belittling the sacrifice of Christ - when it should have been me - really does offend me. And your saying "lighten up".
I would expect you to understand that some things should be off limits out of respect for those who may or may not share the same beliefs.
I thought "respect of persons" and "do no harm" were basic ideals behind liberal theology.

Well, Ron - I didn't write the show... but I think you are misunderstanding the joke if you think they are making fun of the Crucifixion. I'm not saying "lighten up" in the sense of "don't get upset about someone making fun of something that is sacred to you" - I'm saying "lighten up" in the sense of "don't think they are making fun of something sacred to you"... they are really just making fun of conservative Christians and their media personalities.
And, you have to bear in mind... it's hard to hear someone like Wildmon calling foul about being offended, when so much of his business is centered around going out of his way to make life worse for gay people -- not talking about jokes about show tunes -- talking about keeping their families illegal, discouraging monagamy, and urging boycotts of companies that support their rights and market their products to them.
According to my own liberal theology, Wildmon should still be met with love and respect. And you're right to call me on my tone toward him. But, on the other hand, it would be nice if something - if not a joke on television, then something would pierce his self-righteous bubble and spur him to do some thinking about what kind of organization he wants to run... Whether he wants to address injustice like Darfur, and laugh along with the TV jokes for the utterly unimportant things that they are, or whether he wants to create injustice - like boycotting Ford - and get bent out of shape by TV jokes like they matter more than lives.
