My neighbors have an Akita puppy now. She sometimes comes to our yard and begs attention - the dog, that is - not the neighbor. Frankly I'm in love with her:

She kind of reminds me of somebody, you know?

Anyway, it's been a while since this blog communed with the Friday Ark, but I hope that doesn't mean you all have forgotten to visit the virtual zoo. TGIF (said with even more passion than usual).

The Tree

from - smijer

Sorry, the photos aren't so good, and they're heavily cropped to reduce the viewing area of a part of the house I'm not so proud to display... BUT

The Meowy doggies got a nice Christmas present this year, and because the camera has been passed around so much, I've only now gotten the opportunity to photograph them using it...

They love it, and it would be a shame not to let them share their joy with the Friday Animal community.

Lassie

from - smijer

I love this (h/t - Watermark, via the Friday Ark)

Rosheisen said his cat, Tommy, must have hit the right buttons to call 911.

"I know it sounds kind of weird," Officer Patrick Daugherty said, unsuccessfully searching for some other explanation.

Rosheisen said he couldn't get up because of pain from osteoporosis and ministrokes that disrupt his balance. He also wasn't wearing his medical-alert necklace and couldn't reach a cord above his pillow that alerts paramedics that he needs help.

Daugherty said police received a 911 call from Rosheisen's apartment, but there was no one on the phone. Police called back to make sure everything was OK, and when no one answered, they decided to check things out.

That's when Daugherty found Tommy next to the phone.

Rosheisen got the cat three years ago to help lower his blood pressure. He tried to train him to call 911, unsure if the training ever stuck.

The phone in the living room is always on the floor, and there are 12 small buttons - including a speed dial for 911 right above the button for the speaker phone.

"He's my hero," Rosheisen said.

You can't train a cat? Well, I personally played "fetch" with a Meowy Doggie over the Holidays. Pete-Pete (an animal-blogging veteran) absolutely loves to fetch his toy spider, and will bring it right back to you and drop it in front of you over and over.

Momma Thumbs

from - smijer

Momma Thumbs is such a show-off... I tried to explain to her that polydactyl mowy doggies just aren't that rare, but she insisted on posing to show off those beautiful feets. She's posed here with Elder...

thumb2.JPG

Patches, the baby polydactyl, is extremely skittish, and doesn't permit photography at this time. We believe that whatever disappeared her siblings also gave her a terrible fright. One has to work hard for the opportunity to love on her at all.

More furry goodness, as always, in the Friday Ark.

We're worried about the outside baby - Phantom - (S)he? hasn't been at breakfast in over a week. Here's hoping for her safe return.

Now climb aboard The Ark and spend forty days and forty nights in pure animal heaven.

Emilee and Sophie

from - Buck

Emilee and Sophie.bmp

I know this is not the best picture in the world but my youngest daughter, Emilee, took a picture with her cellphone of her with our cat Sophie and emailed it to me.

Sophie was rescued from a landfill in Rhea County, Tennessee by my brother-in-law. When we got her she was so sick that she could barely lift her head. We brought her home and doctored her and she has been with us now for 12 years.

Our family would not be the same without her.

Lovie, and Mean Cat (aka Mean Dog)... As it turns out, we got their names mixed up... Lovie is the mean one.

Have a nice Friday.

Guest Doggies

from - smijer

I'm not sure if these are Thumbkin's babies. They haven't been welcomed into the smijer household... unfortunately, we are full - and they are still a little timid about us anyway (as evidenced by their recent defecation on the Younger during an attempt at capture). If no one takes them in, then I suppose we will get them veterinary services, including sterilization (not to mention the same for Momma Thumbs, whom Mrs. smijer suspects of being once more in the family way). Admire their beauty:

Black Doggie -- probably the cutest.. The Sweet Gum ball doesn't hurt:

blackdoggie.JPG

Winkie - I'm not sure if she has a problem with that right eye... just a few moments after this was shot, I caught another glimpse, and she didn't appear to, but she does seem to keep it closed a lot:

Phantom - This one makes me think of the Phantom of the Opera, but you would see better what I mean if it faced you head on...

Have a nice Friday, and visit the Friday Ark.

Doggies in Dreamland:

I love these doggies.

Primates are fun, too. Read about your clever cousins.

Fishy Eggs? If you can no longer get the Caspian kind, then maybe it's time to switch to Chattanooga Beluga... Or not.

And I sure have been seeing a lot of these things about lately...

Thumbelina

from - smijer

I'm pretty sure this is the momma doggie... of at least one of the new babies, maybe both. She hasn't officially joined the family, but we put food out for her. I think I'll call her thumbelina.

thumbelina.JPG

I've examined her paws, and I can't say with any certainty that she is actually polydactyl, but the thumbs are there, whether they be finger 5 or finger 6. I think I love her just as much as the babies.

Update: I checked the front paws. The thumbs each consist of two digits, for a total of six on each front paw. So she's a sho' nuff polydactyl doggie.

Don't forget the Ark.

Babies With No Names

from - smijer

Good Friday Morning. smijer & family have had a couple new additions to the household. No names for them yet, unless we can get enough votes to override the wifely veto on "Squirt" for the light gray one. New Baby Doggies in 3... 2... 1...

No Animals Today

from - smijer

The good news is that critter Friday will be back next week. The camera once was lost, but now is found. That means I can't rush out and buy an expensive new camera, but that's ok... I couldn't have done that anyway.

The other good news is that you can still get your metazoan fix Goliath passed away this week. We suspect it may have been an act of rodenticide on the part of her housemate, Little John. RIP, little friend.

Oh, and I borrowed a little rhesus monkey to cute up the page in the absense of the regular Animal Blogging feature:

Rhesus Monkey.jpg

Have a nice Friday. I'll try to pop back in before the day is out with some other thoughts, if I can.

Friday... uh... aughh...

from - smijer

Well, it appears I've misplaced my camera, or perhaps had it lifted out of the car. So, I can't post a lovely animal picture.

Instead, with much revulsion, I present a very distasteful story.

I suppose Rick Santorum will link this to King County's rampant liberalism... until he figures out that Enumclaw was one of those eastern exurbs that Bush won.

For your Friday critter fix, without all the stomach-churning, visit the Friday Ark.

Not much time this morning... so quick roundup:
Blogmeet: If you're a blogger in traveling distance of Chattanooga, and you can set aside time in the afternoon of Saturday, July 16, please think about marking your calendar for the first official Chattanooga area blogmeet. I'll be making phone calls to area venues Monday to set aside space for us. So far, the only venues nominated are Northshore Grill/Stone Cup. If you have other suggestions, please let us know.

Letter to the London Terrorists: (Rated R): Read this, if you haven't already. Full text, if you have time.
